Meditative Forest Therapy Walk in the Retreat

The concept of “Forest Bathing”

One of the most memorable experiences in our retreat program is the forest therapy walk along a certified road in the peaceful countryside in Fukuoka.

While “forest bathing / SHINRIN YOKU” has gained global attention as a wellness trend, in Japan it is deeply rooted in our culture.

When I discovered that forest bathing is considered a unique concept in Japan — and not a common idea in many other countries — I was genuinely surprised. For us, it feels completely natural, much like sunbathing or moonbathing, to simply be in the forest and soak in its presence.

“Certified” Forest Therapy Road in the retreat area

Certain forests even receive official accreditation after passing a series of scientific and environmental tests, such as measuring oxygen concentration and biodiversity. The path we visit is one of these certified places, ensuring an environment that is truly nourishing for both mind and body.

Because our retreat is based in a quiet rural area, we often have the entire forest to ourselves. There are no crowds, no traffic — just the calming sounds of nature. The gentle murmur of the stream running alongside the path, the rustling leaves, and the filtered light through the bamboo groves create a setting where you can fully slow down and breathe. It feels as though time moves differently here, allowing you to be completely present in the moment.

Many Discoveries along the way

Nature always has its surprises. After the rain, we sometimes spot wild river crabs crossing the path, venturing out from the streams for their own little adventures. Guests often discover unexpected treasures — wild berries, leaves in unusual shapes, or a sudden clearing revealing a breathtaking view of the bamboo forest.

One time we had snowfall during the walk, and that was absolutely magical!

Each walk brings something unique, making it not just a healing experience, but also one filled with small joys and discoveries.

Our forest therapy walk is more than just a gentle stroll — it’s an opportunity to reconnect with nature in its purest form. By the time we leave the forest, guests often describe feeling lighter, calmer, and more refreshed. It’s a simple yet powerful reminder of how deeply nature can restore us. And perhaps the most beautiful part? This peaceful forest is ours to explore together, one mindful step at a time.
