Junko Sensei and Her Love for Kimono

Popular Kimono Workshop during the retreat

One of the highlights of our retreat programs is the kimono workshop, led by Junko sensei. She runs a beautiful antique kimono shop, but her story is even more inspiring. Junko once worked in an office, following a typical career path, but eventually left to dedicate herself to what she truly loves: kimono.

Her passion for kimono actually started long before her shop. Growing up, she was influenced by her mother, who collected many kimono pieces. That love and appreciation passed from mother to daughter, and today, you can feel that warmth and generational connection reflected in every corner of Junko’s shop. It’s not just a business, but a continuation of her family’s love for kimono.

When Junko visits our retreat center, she always brings an incredible selection of kimono and accessories. A guest once asked her how many kimono she owns, and she laughed, saying it’s impossible to count — because the number is in the thousands! Guests are endlessly curious, asking her about how often she wears kimono, the rules for putting one on, how to choose a beautiful piece, and the history behind the patterns. She answers every question with joy, showing her deep knowledge and true passion.

Antique kimono pieces are especially fascinating. They come from particular historical periods, when the average height of Japanese people was shorter than today. Because of this, many antique kimono are smaller in size, yet they carry such charm and artistry. With Junko’s guidance, they become treasures to admire and appreciate, not just clothing.

And the experience doesn’t end at our retreat venue. Guests also have the chance to visit Junko’s shop during the program, where they can explore her full collection. Some even discover the perfect kimono piece to take home — a meaningful souvenir, rich with history and personal connection.

Junko’s workshops are never just about dressing up. They are about stepping into a tradition, guided by someone whose passion runs deep across generations. Through her, guests don’t just wear kimono — they feel the story, the artistry, and the love behind them.

We now have just one twin room left for our April 2026 retreat. If you’ve been considering joining us in spring, this is your last chance before the program is fully booked.

The next opportunity will be in October 2026, with bookings for that intake opening in January 2026. We would love to welcome you to experience the beauty of Japan’s countryside with us.
